Talladega sits in the Coosa River valley, with the Appalachian foothills rising just east of town. The city covers about 26 square miles, and the ground around Talladega shifts over short distances. Streets near the courthouse square sit close to 587 feet, and the land climbs east toward the Talladega National Forest. West of town it drops toward the Coosa River and the shoreline of Logan Martin Lake. Highway 77 runs north through the middle of town toward Interstate 20, about 14 miles up. Highway 21 comes down from Munford, and Choccolocco Creek drains the north end of the county.
Homes inside the city limits are on sewer lines run by the City of Talladega Water and Sewer Department. Outside those lines, a septic tank and a set of field lines handle everything the house sends out. The Talladega County Water Department sells drinking water only, so county water at the road does not mean sewer. Downtown and the older streets near the courthouse square are on the city sewer system. Bemiston grew up around a cotton mill and now sits inside the Talladega city limits. Brecon sits on the edge of town, where a wartime plant once ran. Curry, Mardisville, Waldo, and Winterboro all sit outside the city sewer system.
Lots along Stemley Bridge Road and the roads near Logan Martin Lake are almost all on septic. The same goes for places up Highway 21 toward Munford and south toward Alpine. Talladega County covers two kinds of ground, and both show up close to town. Near the Coosa River the soils formed over cherty limestone, and they run gravelly. East toward the hills the soils formed over granite and schist, with red clay under a loam top. Red clay takes water slowly, so a drain field on clay usually needs more trench.
Septic permits here come from the Talladega County Health Department under the state onsite sewage program. A new build outside the sewer lines needs that permit before septic installation begins. Work on an existing tank or field line goes through the same office. Alabama requires a licensed installer, and Jim holds an Alabama Level II (advanced) onsite wastewater installer license.
