Oxford sits at the south end of Calhoun County, where the ridges drop into the Choccolocco Valley. Choccolocco Creek runs right through the middle of Oxford. Most of the built up part of town is on city sewer. The Water Works and Sewer Board of the City of Oxford runs those lines. Past the last sewer main, that changes. Homes in Coldwater, Bynum and DeArmanville sit on septic tanks. So do places out toward Choccolocco and Eastaboga. The south side of the city backs up to the Talladega National Forest, and those lots run on septic too. That split is normal here. City sewer covers the middle, and septic covers the rest.

City sewer follows the busy corridors. Lines run along US 78, Highway 21 and Leon Smith Parkway, where the shops and older neighborhoods sit. Wastewater from those lines goes to the city treatment plant. Everything outside that footprint treats waste on the lot.
Oxford has annexed a lot of ground to the south and west since 1970, including Coldwater and Bynum. Many of those homes went in on septic and still run that way. The same holds east toward DeArmanville and Choccolocco, and south toward Munford and the forest line. Chosea Springs and the Eastaboga side sit outside the sewer footprint as well.
