Gadsden sits on the Coosa River at the center of Etowah County, about 580 feet above sea level. The city is the county seat, with roughly 34,000 people inside the limits. North of downtown, the south end of Lookout Mountain climbs toward Noccalula Falls on Black Creek. That split between river bottom and mountain ground drives how septic systems work in Gadsden.
