Fort Payne runs its own wastewater plant, and the Water Works Board takes sewer calls inside the city limits. The city covers a lot of ground for its size. More than half of that area now sits on top of Lookout Mountain. Mains do not reach every road up there. Before you buy a lot, ask the Water Works Board whether a sewer line serves the street.
Outside the city limits, septic is the rule. Pine Ridge borders Fort Payne on the west and has no sewer plant of its own. The same goes for Hammondville, Mentone and the pockets around Adamsburg and Portersville. Cabins along the Lookout Mountain Parkway above DeSoto State Park sit on tanks too. The permit comes from the DeKalb County Health Department, which keeps its office right here in town. A permit to install is issued before work starts. The state requires the installer to hold an Alabama Onsite Wastewater Board license.
