Southside sits on the south bank of the Coosa River in Etowah County. Neely Henry Lake backs up the river along that whole stretch. Alabama Highway 77 runs the length of Southside and crosses the river toward Rainbow City and the city of Gadsden. The city grew out of old farm settlements: Green Valley, Cedar Bend, Pilgrims Rest, and Markton. Southside voted to incorporate in 1957 and built its first water system that same year. Away from the highway the ground climbs into the foothills, and the lots get wider. That mix of river bottom and steep ridge shapes most of the septic work here.
